A conversation with Kyle
We sat down with online student Kyle Fraser-Allen who’s pursuing the Global Finance and Banking MSc alongside his career. Kyle works for MetLife Investment Management and took the course to advance his career potential. He gave us an exclusive insight into why he chose to study at King’s and shared his personal experience about the online learning environment
The online programme is incredibly flexible. I’m able to download all of the learning material into my iPad, so I can use it when I’m travelling on the train, or flying – really anytime. It suits my other commitments as well, especially my career.
Why did you choose to study Global Finance & Banking at King’s?
I chose to study Global Finance & Banking because I thought it was the perfect course for the career transition I’m looking to make. I currently work in product development, and I would like the opportunity to transition into company research, whether that be fixed income or equities. The King’s brand is reputable, and I thought this advanced degree would resonate in the industry.
Why does online learning suit you better?
The online programme is incredibly flexible. I’m able to download all of the learning material into my iPad, so I can use it when I’m travelling on the train, or flying – really anytime. It suits my other commitments as well, especially my career. Being physically present in the classroom just wouldn’t be possible alongside my work. I’ve also studied online for other qualifications, so it is something I am accustomed to doing and I know works well for me.
What has your experience as an online student been like?
Seamless. I have been able to take exams during certain periods, and the contact with the tutors and the student advisor has been great. The flexibility has been convenient for my lifestyle.
How have you adjusted to learning within an online environment?
I have used other online learning environments to study for the Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) exam and the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) exam, and relative to those experiences, I found KEATS very easy to use. Watching lectures, answering online questions, and printing materials are things I’m comfortable with doing from previous experience studying online, and I can do all this and more on KEATS. It was good to discover that not only does a university like King’s provide this opportunity, but that the quality is also of a very high standard.
How has the programme helped you in your day-to-day role?
As my current role differs highly from the career change I would like to make, the master’s is really in preparation for this career transition. The depth of the MSc makes me confident I will be ready to apply my learning in my new career journey
In terms of support, what has been most helpful to you / makes the experience easier?
I’ve had a lot of support from the student advisors – they have been very responsive. Updates and results are important to me, and I get those in a timely manner, which I really appreciate. The lecturers and KEATS team have been very receptive to feedback, always incorporating comments and suggestions from students right away. I know that sometimes, in other programmes, updates after feedback can take a long time, but not with this programme – necessary change happens very quickly. I have another colleague in the MSc, and she sees this progression as well, the openness and willingness to adapt to feedback is something we have appreciated.
What difference is this master’s going to make to your career?
My current role has a lot of interaction with the investment team but is not investment-specific. With this exposure to the team, I am learning the practical and theoretical knowledge I need for my career. At job interviews, I will be able to answer questions, such as pricing bonds, analysing security, or what is my understanding of corporate finance concepts. I previously understood these concepts at a basic level, but the course has taught me the detailed, deeper level of understanding I need to succeed. Even the extra learning materials, such as recommended books and articles, have allowed me to go into a lot more depth than I would in any other course. I have seen several job specifications with requests for a Master’s in Finance, so ultimately, this master’s gives me that edge I need to be seen and to confidently walk into an interview.
What advice would you give to someone considering studying an online programme with King’s?
My advice would be to fully immerse yourself in the programme and the experience of being a King’s College London student. There is no difference between being a King’s student online or on-campus. For example, I joined the King’s football team, and I have been to several campus events – immerse yourself and make as many contacts as possible. Also, embrace the flexibility, it’s a great perk if you’re busy in your current career and other commitments.
