Welcome to King’s

Dear student,

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to your online course here at King’s College London. These programmes are specially designed to provide you with a postgraduate education of outstanding quality from a world-leading university.

King’s is the fourth oldest university in England and based in the heart of London. We have more than 33,000 students from over 190 countries. Today, you join a community that has included pioneers

such as James Clerk Maxwell, Joseph Lister and Rosalind Franklin, Nobel Prize winners such as Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Peter Higgs, and creative geniuses including Thomas Hardy and Virginia Woolf.

We are enormously proud of this heritage and our strong culture of service to society. However, we are not resting on our laurels; we are always looking to improve and develop. Whether you are studying humanities or the sciences, social sciences or law, you can be sure that you are receiving a world-class education from internationally distinguished academics.

I do hope that you enjoy your time with us at King’s. It is my firm belief that you will find your study experience rich and intellectually fulfilling, and that you yourself will grow as an interesting, interested individual with the potential to accomplish genuinely great things. • Greater independence
  • Greater resilience
  • Greater responsibility for your own learning
  • Greater initiative in seeking help and support

  • Research approaches. “Do I need to source first-hand data for my project?”
  • Access to learning resources. “I can’t find a book about my specialist subject.”
  • Module related issues. “I can’t post a comment on this week’s discussion board.”

If you aren’t sure who you should speak to, it’s best to ask the Student Success Team first. They’ll be able to put you in touch with the right staff member

Exploring your virtual learning environment

Your online learning content is delivered through a virtual learning environment called KEATS, which stands for the King’s E-Learning and Teaching Service.

KEATS is an advanced learning platform designed to enable, extend and even enhance the types of learning activities that you would expect to find in a traditional on-campus course.

Once you’ve completed your enrolment tasks (see page eight), you will be granted access to KEATS. You will be able to log in using your King’s username (the letter k followed by seven numbers) and password.

After you have logged in successfully, you will be able to view your dashboard and see which modules you are currently enrolled on. You can also access the King’s Online Student Hub by self-enrolling on the module. This area of KEATS has lots of helpful resources for you to refer to throughout your studies with King’s. Here you will find information on study skills resources, mentoring opportunities, key dates, important contacts, careers advice, King’s College London Students’ Union (KCLSU), and much more.

See page 16 for more information about the Hub.

At the top of your dashboard you can visit the quick links tab which will help you locate your King’s emails and student records portal.
Please check this regularly for new emails and updates.

Having problems?
Should you have any trouble navigating KEATS, please refer to the Essential Digital Skills Hub (found in Student Help) for a course on using the platform. You can also reach out to your Student Success Advisor for a walkthrough over Zoom. Should you have any trouble with your username or password, please contact our IT Service Desk for assistance.

Contacting IT Service Desk
As an online student, access to technical assistance is key. We are able to provide an IT Service Desk that is available to you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week 365 days a year.

Taking a break from your studies

Module opt-outs
If you have an unavoidable obligation outside of your course and need a break, you can speak to your Student Success Advisor about opting out of a module.

You are permitted to informally opt-out of up to three teaching modules in a row. Students must arrange an opt-out with their Student Success Advisor before 12:00 on the continuing student payment deadline (two weeks before the teaching start date). If, by this point, you have already paid the module cost, the module fee will be held on your account to pay for later modules.

Please bear in mind that missing a module may delay your graduation time considerably.

Reassessment break
If you have pending reassessments in the next teaching period, you may be able to take an exceptional ‘Reassessment Break’ from the next module to allow you to focus solely on your reassessment. This is something you will need to discuss with your Student Success Advisor.

Interruptions of study
If you need more time off, you can apply for a formal ‘Interruption of Study’ for a period of up to two years. As this would involve formally suspending your studies, an interruption should not be undertaken lightly. Please have an extensive conversation with your Student Success Advisor to find out whether it’s right for you.

During a formal study interruption, students would maintain access to KEATS, to any previously completed modules, and to their King’s email accounts. Students are advised to keep in regular touch with the Student Success Team. During an interruption, students are not permitted to take part in any academic activities such as reassessments.

Please note

- Students that miss three consecutive modules without arranging an opt-out with the Student Success Team will be considered withdrawn from the course.

- King’s regulations forbid students to enrol or study on any other courses during their time with us.

From your second module onwards, you will be required to pay course fees on a modular basis.

You will be sent an invoice prior to the start of each module. Payment for this invoice must be received by King’s College London by the specified payment deadlines. Students that miss this deadline will have their access to the module suspended before the module starts.

Students are automatically enrolled on each module and sent an

invoice, so make sure you discuss your module plans with your

Student Success Advisor. They need to be informed if you’d like to

take a break in advance of the payment deadline.

Finding your invoices

Your module invoices will be delivered by email to both your King’s

IT Account email and your personal email address. If you can’t find

a copy of the email, please log in to Student Records and find your

invoices listed under My Fees > Student Fee Details.

From the English Literary Society to the IoPPN Student Association, involve yourself in a new subject and enrich your learning experience.

Student Council

Events
If you’re lucky enough to be in London, come and visit our campus. You are welcome at any of the various Students’ Union events that run throughout the year. From badminton tournaments to board game nights, tours of campus or guest lectures; whatever your interests, you’re sure to find a community that you can feel at home in.

Disability support

At King’s College London, we are committed to providing a diverse and inclusive learning environment. The Disability Support Team provides information, advice and guidance to disabled students, including those with long-term medical conditions or specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia. As everybody’s needs are different, it is important that a Disability Advisor speaks with you about your individual requirements.

Disability Advice Service
King’s has a dedicated, confidential Disability Advice Service. You can schedule confidential, one-to-one appointments with an advisor. There are also dedicated advisors for students with mental health conditions. Do not worry if you are not local to London; appointments can take place via Microsoft Teams, telephone or, if necessary, email.

The Disability Advice Service also offers a range of informative resources such as factsheets on different types of disability, study guides and support in applying for relevant disability funding such as Disabled Students Allowance (DSA).

If you are unsure whether you would qualify for support then please do get in touch with the service at disability@kcl.ac.uk.

King’s Inclusion Plan (KIP)
A King’s Inclusion Plan (KIP) is a personalised document that summarises your disabilities and how they affect your studies. It will also recommend ways we can support you during your time with us. Nothing in your KIP will be sent without your explicit approval, and would only be distributed to those who are essential in implementing adjustments. A KIP will stay in place for the duration of your studies, but can be updated if necessary.

Graduation

Content

Once you’ve successfully completed your studies, you will be invited to a graduation ceremony in either January or July, depending on your programme completion time. This is a chance for you to meet your fellow online classmates as well as graduating on-campus students to celebrate your monumental achievement together.

If you are an international student and planning to attend your graduation ceremony, please remember to check your visa requirements well in advance of planning your visit to the UK. The International Student Support team would be able to assist with visa related questions.

The Student Success Team will be pleased to see you attend the ceremony.

Content (copy small)
This brochure was updated in August 2025. It contains information on our online study courses that King’s College London (‘King’s’) intends to run for students who are planning to start at King’s in 2024/25. King’s has made every effort to ensure that this information is both helpful and accurate but some changes, for example to courses, facilities or fees, may become necessary due to legitimate staffing, financial, regulatory or academic reasons.

King’s will endeavour to keep changes to a minimum, and to keep applicants informed appropriately. For this reason, it is important that you regularly check the website for updates or contact King’s using the contact details contained within this document. www.kcl.ac.uk
